Edgar was confused. He couldn't understand what had happened, but one day he had been visiting his gram with his family, and the next thing he knew, his gram was gone. His mother had explained it to him repeatedly, but it didn't click with his brain. He couldn't understand what she meant by the words 'stroke' or 'heart attack'; all he knew was that his gram wasn't there, smiling and playing cards with him.
"What are we going to do?" His mother was sobbing uncontrollably as she and her brothers were presented with stacks of paperwork. Between the three of them, the funeral and reception would easily be paid for, though none of them thought of that. Their mother had been the foundation for the family for as long as any of them could remember. At age 70, she had still been active and energetic, more healthy and lively than her entire family, Edgar aside. The fact that a stroke had killed her came as a shattering blow to her children. Edgar looked carefully at the expressions on his uncles' faces, then turned back to his mother. "Mommy, where did they take gram?" "Edgar honey..." She choked back tears, but didn't seem able to find words to explain the situation. Her youngest brother leaned down and smiled gravely at Edgar. "They took her to a safe place so that she can be at peace, Edgar." Edgar looked at him hopefully and smiled. "Peace is good, right? Can I go too?" His mother turned away from him, and his uncle looked at the floor and paused before looking back at him again. "No, not yet, Edgar. We've got to stay here longer, but someday you'll be able to go too." For a moment, Edgar looked crushed. However, he grinned toothily and said, "So it's like a ride at the fair!" He quickly ran over to his mother and tugged at her sleeve. "It's okay, mommy, you're just not tall enough to get on the peace ride yet! Once I get taller, you and I can go together! I bet gram is having fun there now! She's lucky," he added as an afterthought. "In school, my teacher always says that peace is a good thing. Gram's got to be at the best place ever!" He looked up at his mother and smiled again. "Just a bit taller, mommy. Then we'll go on the peace ride and it'll be lots of fun!" His mother looked at him oddly for a moment, then she started to laugh. "Alright, Edgar. We'll go on the ride when we get taller. And maybe we'll get a snow cone or some ice cream when we're there, sound good?" Edgar positively beamed. "Yeah!" She picked up the six year old and held him close; her brothers came close to her, all three of them smiling as well. Through little Edgar's eyes, they could make it past anything. -------------------- Lineart done by =Sunkpunk Digital coloring done by =b0r3d13 Story done by *GaioumonBatou And we're done! |
